In Praise of John Brown

I stumbled across this writer a couple of years ago when I read Return to Oz a book that detailed his re-visit to Australia. Having enjoyed this work, I thought no more about him until I realised his new Book - North of Watford Gap was due for release.

There is always that moment of anticipation when you have enjoyed the first of anything - eg, will the follow up be as good, can he repeat the same familiar writing patterns etc.

I needn't have worried. His latest work is a gem. In this travelogue he sets out from his native Manchester to dispel some of the preconceptions held by many about 'The North'. John obviously does his homework as the book is stuffed with anecdotes and facts a plenty. Handled by many writers this could become heavy and dry, not so so with John. His obvious wit and light touch carry you along on a journey of total pleasure.

I finshed the book with a pang of regret, and can't wait for his next offering.
